Together towards sustainable agriculture

Also present were Aender Schanck, Chairman of the Oikopolis Group and Volker Manz, Managing Director of the dairy company Biog-Molkerei, to represent the cooperative Bio-Bauere-Genossenschaft Lëtzebuerg (Biog). According to the motto "fair a kooperativ mat de Bio-Baueren", the cooperative has been supporting Luxembourg's organic farmers for over 30 years in marketing their products, that, because of the chosen cultivation method, have been created in respect for nature and humans. Quality and solidarity have always played an overriding role.

The background to the visit are the preparations for the new agricultural law as well as the ongoing negotiations on the strategic plan for the next four-year Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) of the EU. The CAP guidelines for the period 2023-2027, as well as their implementation in Luxembourg, will be determined in exchange with the various actors in the agricultural sector.

There is no lack of challenges. The pandemic pointed out how systemically relevant this economic sector is for a small country like Luxembourg, and the climate crisis has long been knocking at the door in Europe as well - with noticeable consequences for agriculture and food production. The government's goal is to move local agriculture towards sustainable and fair farming methods, as well as to promote regional products with short transport distances. In the time of economic recovery, a practical reform of the law is to be realised in a joint dialogue, which should ensure the continued existence of the Luxembourg agricultural sector.
